Yvette Hernandez

I had my first child at age 17, so I have first hand experience with teen pregnancies and the obstacles this presents. After completing high school, with baby in arms I dedicated myself to my family. It seemed that breastfeeding my son was a full time job. After the birth of my daughter I became involved with a great non-profit organization, The Martinez Street Woman’s Center. There I did community outreach as a Health Promotora. During that time I educated families on children’s nutrition and breast cancer awareness. I later joined MELD, a great parenting support group. Once my son started school I became very active in volunteering in the classroom as well as PTA. In my involvement with these organizations I made friends with like minded women. One special friend invited me to be a part of her home birth and I enthusiastically agreed. As I attended her prenatal appointments with her midwife, I found my calling as a doula. I was led to San Antonio Birth Doulas and quickly joined and began training and volunteering. Later I became assistant director of this non-profit and still love supporting teens and low income women. I most recently trained and became certified as a Lamaze Childbirth Educator. I am living out my passion and greatly enjoying it. I was raised in a Spanish speaking home and my kids are also growing up with our native language. I am fluent in reading, writing, and speaking Spanish.
